about

Last September, Jennifer and I lost a pregnancy at 4 months. It was a confusing emotional experience. Certainly not equivalent to the grief of those who lose a child. Yet, it wasn't nothing. We had prepared a place in our lives for someone who never showed up.

A year later, I find myself thinking about it a lot. I think I'll be reminded of it every September. It's part sadness, part curiosity. In real life, there aren't many spaces to talk about this feeling, and there are zero places where I'll ever get to satisfy the curiosity by meeting the person who never showed up.

Songs can be those places, however. Now a space exists to let those feelings be what they are, and to address those who can't be addressed otherwise. I hope that this song might be helpful to anyone else who has had a similar experience.

lyrics

It's crazy to miss you
I'm not getting out of bed
There's ghosts in the kitchen
The hammer sleeps in the shed

Those 2 trees where I was gonna build the treehouse
stand silent since the day you left

I'm getting older
Don't know if I'll ever build it now

Every September
Crunch of the driveway tires
Can't help but remember
Reading those thin grey wires

No treehouse, no cradle in my arms, no space
beside me in the bed

So I wrote this song
So we would have a place
To be together

It's crazy to miss you
Like missing a dream when you rise
He cries in the kitchen
What colour were your eyes?

No treehouse, no cradle in my arms
no doubles in the go-kart race

So I wrote this song
So we would have a place
To play together

To be together
